Bandar Seri Begawan - After raising an amount of B$107,000 for four charitable organisations in the nation from more than 2,000 participants last year, the HSBC's Walk Run Cycle Charity event is back this year, which for the first time, will be held at night at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien on May 19.

The highly successful HSBC's Walk Run Cycle Charity event was launched yesterday, accompanied by a dance performance by HSBC staff during the HSBC Fair.

Present at the launch was Mr Lim Boon Teck, Manager Corporate Sustainability of HSBC Brunei; and Liza Kamarudin, Assistant Manager Corporate Sustainability of HSBC; as well as senior management officials.

"This year, a total of four categories/routes are available for the public to participate in to raise fund for charity, namely 40km (open to cycling only) for 16 years old and above, 11.5km (walk, run or cycle) for six years old and above, 6km (walk, run or cycle) for six years old and above, and 2km (walk, run or cycle) for six years old and above.

According to Mr Lim Boon Teck, "The main objective of the event is to raise fund to contribute towards the education of children with special needs."

He then added, "The theme for this year's Walk Run Cycle is 'Unleash their abilities', which means helping Brunei's special need children to achieve their full potential."

He further highlighted, "All the proceeds from the Walk Run Cycle event will be donated to Pusat Ehsan, KACA, SMARTER and Learning Ladders, as well as local environmental causes. We are also looking at other government institutions like Pusat Bahagia."

To be held at night for the first time, he reassured the participants, "Safety has always been our main priority therefore we have already spoke with the relevant authorities for safety measures. We will also provide each participant with a reflector, which is one of the items included in the back pack. Other items include a T-shirt, a one-week pass to Fitness Zone, gift from Laneige, as well as coupons from Pastamania."

Members of the public can start registering for the event commencing from now until May 5. Forms are available at all HSBC branches, HSBC Finance Beribi and Triple Star Kiulap. Each participant will have to pay a fee of MO, and to further raise fund for the special needs children, a donation card will also be provided for every participant.

Beside the goodies in the backpack, all participants will stand a chance to win attractive lucky draw prizes, worth more than B$15,000.

Baram Reghatta 2011, Marudi

The Baram Regatta

The main objective of the Baram Regatta was to substitute for old bloody-feuds and to persuade the tribes to aid the government in keeping the peace. To suppress fighting and head-hunting, the then Resident of Baram, Charles Hose organized an annual race for the war-canoes of all the villagers n April 1899. All the longhouses in the Baram and Tinjar were informed. They included the Kenyahs of the Baram, the Lirongs of the Tinjar and Madangs of the central highlands as well as a number of Ibans.

The Baram Regatta was first introduced about 109 years ago where it has become a much awaited popular event until today. It was introduced with the intention to preserve harmony and enhance unity.
